  1. Dan and Megan,

Thanks so much for putting this blog together! My family has enjoyed trying out the many different dining options in the area, although we too have bemoaned the dearth of truly fine dining in the area (having moved from an area with some of the top restaurants in the country!). And no, Number 5 doesn't count. We have really enjoyed Tranquil, which I didn't see in a cursory glance at your blog archive. Closest thing to a truly gourmet experience, IMHO. Also, another favorite is Crepe Heaven. Delicious, inexpensive, unique. I want to see these places stay in business! Enjoy!

  2. Kathy, thanks for the recommendations.

Megan and I have been to Tranquil and really liked it! The English Toffee Pudding dessert was perhaps the most amazing thing I've eaten in Binghamton. We plan on going there again soon to take pictures for a review.

I have not been to Crepe Heaven but Megan has. I've been trying to get her to review it since she lived in France for half a year and is waaay more knowledgeable about crepes than I am. I've definitely wanted to try it out myself for awhile now.

As for Number 5, we've always had good experiences there but I definitely prefer the other restaurant owned by that family, Lampy's in Endicott.

Have you tried Moxie Grill in Conklin? That's one we have yet to visit, but we've heard (mostly) great things.

    Thanks for visiting!

  3. Yes, I've been to Moxie twice and have really enjoyed it. It's a little pricey, but the wood-fired pizza is outstanding and not too expensive. It has a very "hip" vibe.

  4. Is it possible to search the blog for just a particular type of restaurant, say, for example, Greek? Thanks!

  5. Hi Lisa,
I try to keep each post well-tagged as to what kind of restaurant they are. If you click on a tag it will bring up all restaurants that I labeled with the same tag. Here is a link to all the ones I've tagged as "greek":

    Thanks for visiting!

  6. Hello,

I live near Syracuse, but plan on taking my grandmother out for Thanksgiving Day in the Binghamton area. Any leads on places open, good traditional Thanksgiving food, handicap friendly? Many thanks, Eric

  7. Eric,
No idea what may be open on Thanksgiving Day. Binghamton's a pretty traditional town, and I doubt many good local restaurants would be open that day. Some of the area diners might be open and would probably have what you're looking for, food-wise. Most of the diners are also handicap-accessible. I'd recommend the Spot Diner on Upper Front St., Broadway Diner in Endwell, or maybe the Skylark in Vestal. I'd advise checking with each place individually to see if they're planning Turkey Day hours. Good luck and thanks for visiting!

  8. Actually, check this out...

Number 5 open on Thanksgiving Day with a special menu. Warning, though...handicap accessibility could be an issue there as the main dining area is up a flight of stairs....

  9. Dan,

Thank you for responding. I have made reservations at Phil's, hoping that the turkey is as good as their chicken. It's not my preferred way of observing the day, but we need to consider giving family a break, and to get Grandma out of the house.
Best wishes for enjoying the holiday, and thank you for the vast information this blog provides on eats in the Binghamton area.

    Eric

  10. Great Blog! Thanks so much! Man... I thought I knew all the places a foodie would care to visit in Binghamton, but you've opened my eyes to some new ones. Excited to try them based on your recommendations. I would highly recommend trying Java Joes for lunch. Your review did a good job covering their breakfast-time offerings, but the quality of food at lunch for the price is outstanding. Can't go wrong with any of the wraps or paninis. Some favs: Their panini with turkey, apple and brie; Grilled chicken and pesto panini; Mediterranean wrap; southwestern wrap. Give it a shot. Crowds can be heavy around noon, especially on Friday, just to give you fair warning. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

  11. Sean, thanks for the kind words and for the tip on Java Joe's, I will definitely check it out for lunch sometime soon. Keep us posted on places you've visited and enjoyed due to our recommendations!

  12. Hey as a fellow foodie, I love the blog! You guys have to try out Bud's Place on 434 in Apalachin. They have my favorite pizza in the triple cities (plain cheese or "bud's special" - peperoni, sausage and mushroom)... have good homemade spaghetti, and friday night prime rib for $15.95 is very tender and tasty. (order it with a side of homemade spaghetti!) One of the only places in the area (besides Frank's) where the owner comes out to greet customers.

  13. I think Tranquil has the worst service in Binghamton. If you go to the bar, the bartender, Jim, will pretty much ignore you until you waive him down or shoot something at his head like a napkin. He seems very preoccupied and customer service is not his forte. Moreover, as the night wears down all the servers stand at the end of the bar and talk to Jim and another female bartender. Effectively ignoring all patrons at the bar and throughout the restaurant. Moreover, the owner's boyfriend utilizes the restaurant as his a gathering place for his buddies instead of making new guests feel welcome. If Tranquil does not up the ante on customer service, I can't see them staying around. The food is great, but who wants to pay to be ignored. Too bad the chef was not bringing the food to the table, because he really does a great job. Get the old bartender back who was there last year. He was welcoming, made great suggestions, remembered your name and did not stare at you blankly. Also, get servers who want to work and do not operate on attitude and overly informal comments to patrons they know.

  14. Mark, we will certainly get out to Bud's Place at some point...thanks for the recommendation!

Mike, I've heard things like that about the service at Tranquil. We have found the service there to be slow, but well paced. The food was excellent enough that we didn't mind the waiting. The things you describe are definitely something to keep in mind. Sorry to hear you've had some bad experiences there!

  15. I am not anonymous, my name is Angelos and i am the cook at the Argo Restaurant, i am requesting that you please revisit us, there are complications that arose when you visited that have been resolved. I am respectfully asking you for another shot, unannounced ofcourse

  16. Angelos, I am certainly willing to give the Argo another chance. I can't say it's that high on our priority list at this point...but we will get around to it eventually for sure. Thank you for visiting.

  17. Hey how you doing. I recently stumbled upon your blog and I am rather enjoying myself. I love food and quite honestly in these parts there really aren't very many things to do as a student. I generally trust my cooking over the creations of others which on the plus side tends to be cheaper. However, it is nice to get out and about trying the different establishments in the area. I posted a comment about the chinese restaurant fu star as anonymous because I was on my phone. I just wanted to know if you knew of any good "wing" places. I have tried the wings at Dugout and nips, although i have had wings at various pizza joints and even the rat i didn't think it necessary to include them here. If you havent been to either of those places i find the wings to be fairly tasty, i recommend the bourbon street wings at Dugout and the garlic parm wings at nips. Although taste is very important when it comes to wing, I believe that value is also very important because half the fun of eating wings is the massive quantity in which you consume them. I was hoping you could recommend a few wing joints that were of a higher standard but friendly on the wallet. :D thanks again for blogging

  18. John, thanks for visiting! As far as wings go in the area, I think there are a few places worth considering (although I can't profess to be an expert in the wing department since I'm not that big a fan of the "bar & grill" scene in general). If you have not tried Kelly's in Endicott, I find their wings to be pretty good, and very large. A number of people I know swear by the BBQ wings there; I am partial to the "Hot Garlic" variety. Another place we've gone recently was The Galley. I liked the hot sauce but found the wings to be a little skimpy. Another place where I've gotten wings a lot is Delgado's in Johnson City. The notable thing about these wings is that the sauces are rather unique. Perhaps an acquired taste for some, but I remember liking them for the most part. A few other places I've heard are good (but have not tried) are Deacon's Bench in Johnson City and Airport Inn by the Greater Binghamton Airport. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting but all of these places might be worth checking out if you like wings.

  19. Thanks for you suggestions ill be sure to try them out.i also realized that you mention sakura fairly often in your review of various japanese restaurants but you have never really reviewed it. I personally love sakura. If you ever find yourself there again i recommend something thats off the menu. Its called Hwae Dup Bap, its a korean version of chirasi which is an assortment of various fish served over rice. Hwae dup bap is served with a spicy sauce called cho jang consisting of traditional korean chili paste(gochu jang) mixed with vinegar. When you eat it cover it in chojang and mix it thoroughly. I dont know if you are good at eating spicy foods but it does have a mild kick to it. I personally drown it in the sauce but it maybe because it reminds me of home. Anyways i hope you enjoy it.

  20. An idea for the blog is to have a page with the restaurants clumped by grade, so if we're looking for an 'A' restaurant we can browse the list. Just a thought. Thanks for the info!! :)

  21. Anna, that is a really good idea. I will keep that one in mind for a future update. Thanks for visiting!

  22. John,

We have been to Sakura many times but have not yet done a formal review. With things like sushi the reviews are more fun with pictures since the artistry of the presentation is part of the whole experience, and we haven't been over there since starting the blog. We tried to go around 9:00 PM last Saturday night but they were closed for some reason. I will keep the Hwae Dup Bap in mind for whenever we make it back over (should be soon since both of us are on a sushi kick at the moment). Thanks for the tip.

  25. I didnt know where else to post this but...
Honestly... lately i have been noticing an increase in "hate" comments. I would to say something on behalf of Dan and his blog.... FIRST OF ALL Dan never claims to be an expert in anyway merely a general person who enjoys their food... as some may say a person who lives to eat rather than eat to live... Secondly... THIS IS A BLOG not a website claiming to give out michelin stars... therefore... these reviews are merely his opinions and takes on these restaurants... HE PUTS THEM THERE SO YOU CAN COMPARE... and they are his personal recommendations... if you disagree you should politely place your response as to how your visit was to inform people of what was different not to be an ass who just wants to be angry and is obviously not very confident in their own words.... considering pretty much all of you choose to remain anonymous... honestly... if you don't agree with his reviews... GO START YOUR OWN F@%$ing WEBSITE...

anyways... that being said... just noticed i haven't seen a new review in a while:D i do rather enjoy the reviews even I wont be able to try out all of these restaurants I like reading these reviews as well as many of the various comments other people place:D

  26. You should try Mirarchi's in Endwell, their pizza is really good fresh. It has a sweeter sauce on its pizza than most other places, it's good! They also have some really good specialty pizzas, like the lasagna and texas roadhouse pizza.

  27. Thanks for taking the time to do this blog – it’s great to see reviews of all the eateries we want to try – at least we know what to expect (and sometimes, what to avoid). I’m a big fan of Philly Cheese Steaks, but haven’t had a lot of luck with these in the area. Any recommendations other than the Home Deli?
